Is Your Job Search Grounded

Is Your Job Search Grounded Last year we had our floors replaced it was definitely time to get rid of our abused floors and get something that should last a while longer. During the process, we had to move the kitchen island to we could put the new floor underneath.  I had a friend come do that.  When it was time to put it back I wired the electrical boxes back together. I like doing electrical work (more than plumbing) and have done various electrical projects before. But something weird happened.  Something I didnt think was possible. Lets say the electricity comes from through a wire in the floor (0), to the first box (1), and then to the second box (2). So, from 0 1 2 0 worked fine. 2 worked fine. 1 didnt work. I thought if I made a mistake in 1, then 2 wouldnt work, since it is downstream. Stay with me Im almost to the easy part. So, as is my tradition, I thought about it for a few months.  And when I was sick and tired of not having this outlet work, I decided to get my handy screw driver and see what the problem was. I was thinking one of the wires came loose when I screwed the whole thing back together Guess what?  I had put the ground wire in the wrong place.  Typically there are three wires: white, black, green (which is the ground). For some reason I put the ground in the wrong place. Without the ground in the right place, the outlet didnt work. If I was a real electrician I could tell you why 2 worked, but 1 didnt work. Thats a lot like your job search, isnt it? Are you grounded? I dont know what that means to you I guess you could be emotionally grounded, mentally grounded, physically grounded, socially grounded You could have grounded (or, principled) job search strategies. My point is, if you arent grounded, no matter how many times you go the network meetings or whatever else you are doing, it could all be for nothing. Please, sit down with people to figure out if you are grounded.  Start with yourself have a really honest conversation with yourself.  It could go something like this: You: Self, are you grounded?  Seriously, you know what it means, so be honest! You: No, Im not grounded. You: Okay, good.  You recognize and admit it.  What do we need to do to get grounded? You (being really honest): Well, I really need to . See how easy that was? I went for months and months without my outlet grounded.  I wonder if you are going for months and months without being grounded, and not understanding why things arent working right? Videogames Writing Top Career Tips Part 1

Videogames Writing â€" Top Career Tips Part 1 Ed Smith has established his career as a successful freelance videogame critic. Ed writes for a variety of publications including The Guardian and has worked as a full-time technology correspondent for International Business Times UK. Here is the first part of Ed’s advice on getting into writing. Write Your Own Blog When it comes to starting a career in writing, you have to begin, Im afraid, by working for free. Start your own blog and update it regularly. What will someone find if they Google your name?  Its really important to ensure that they will find evidence of your writing capabilities! Research Options Find websites that publish untested writers and pitch to them.  There are plenty of film, theatre, TV and music journals that accept contributions from unknown writers and beginners. Search for them and then, fashion your pitch.  If game criticism is something you want to try and get into, here are a few sites to start out with. www.killscreen.com www.paste.com www.fiveoutoftenmagazine.com www.gamechurch.com Some of these are free. Others offer small payments for writing. All require pitches! Carefully craft your pitch If you want to get a pitch accepted, you need to be aware of the publications output and tone and the kind of thing they normally run. You need to be able to describe it under 200 words. If your pitch email is running longer than that, condense or rework it. It helps a lot if you can provide a potential five word headline. Be polite, friendly and jovial. If you know the editors name, use it. Get as much information in there as you can and be clear on how your article will progress: “I want to start by discussing X before moving onto Y and finishing by saying Z. Think about your readers Make it clear why your writing will appeal to readers. If youre talking about a current, maybe contentious topic, your idea should reflect that urgency and relevance. If you can take a niche idea and find in it a broader point, for example how the violence in Call of Duty reflects a changing gaming industry, or something like that â€" thats great, too.  A pitch that has a lot of information, as well as a mainstream hook is always strong. Be patient! Once youve sent off your pitch, its a matter of waiting. Some sites will take a long time getting back to you. Others will do it very quickly. You have to remember, editors get dozens, maybe hundreds of pitches every day, so be patient. If you havent heard anything in a fortnight then its okay to send a follow up email. Use the ‘one at a time’ principle One important piece of advice: dont pitch the same article to multiple sites at once. You run the risk of two editors saying yes, and then you have to choose between them and let one of them down. Next time you have an idea that editor might not be so quick to agree to it. Its frustrating and it can be a slow process, but at least when youre starting out, free websites should be hungry for your work. Use Social Media Get a Twitter account and start following as many gaming publications, pundits, developers, writers and editors as you can. This will provide a ticker-tape service of industry news and talking points. Also, conversations over Twitter can create lots of new contacts and potential employers. If you download a service called Tweetdeck you can customise Twitters layout, spreading different feeds into different columns so you can see dozens of publications, people and information sources updating in real-time. Its fantastic tool used by basically every critic and journalist. Utilise it! For more of Eds tips see Videogames Writing â€" Top Career Tips Part 2.

How to Land Your First Corporate Board Role

How to Land Your First Corporate Board Role Many of my executive-level clients have aspirations to serve on a corporate board, either in conjunction with their current role or as part of their career transition into an active retirement. Board seats are exceptionally competitive, and the process for sourcing these roles differs in some ways from the strategies the executive may have used in a previous search. Below are several suggestions for optimizing your board search campaign.Understand that a board resume is different than other resumes.Your current C-level resume may reflect how you grew revenues, reduced costs, improved margins, launched new products, or optimized business operations, but to land a board role you will have to show more. In order to be relevant to a board, you need to be able to show what activities you participated in that are most similar to the work you would do on a board. Board member responsibilities are more aligned with strategic planning, MA activity, financial oversight, governance and compliance, executive compensation, and succession planning. In recent years, board have also become more involved in cyber-security initiatives.Showcase your current interactions with boards. If you don’t have any corporate board experience, focus on interactions you have had with the board. Did you present at board meetings or prepare notes or reports for others that did? Did you help set the agenda or take the board notes? Think about how you have interacted with boards to prove that you are aware of the temperament necessary to be a board member and the culture that surrounds the post.Highlight your non-profit board experience. If you have served as a volunteer board member, you have most likely developed skills that are transferrable to a corporate board role. Develop stories of success around some of your responsibilities such as setting the five-year plan for the organization, overseeing the budget process, or managing a brand transformation,Activate your network. Most board seats are filled through networking. Be sure to stay top-of-mind with your network and let them know about your board aspirations. Develop a pitch outlining your top three skills as they relate to potential board roles.Seek out board education partners and affiliations. The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) offers board education, credentialing, and networking events to individuals serving on boards of public, private, and non-profit organizations. This is a great way to meet others in the corporate board space and become on insider regarding potential opportunities.Be Patient. It typically takes about two years to land a corporate board seat, and if you are currently in a full-time executive role, the trajectory could be longer. Create a plan for pacing yourself and committing to professional development and networking opportunities that keep you on track.
